    Description

THIS IS----a vintage print, undated, as you see it, wear as shown. i have seen people saying this item is from the 1920's but THIS IS NOT THAT OLD, i think it is more like 1980's or 1990's, very nice condition, not easy to find. info about the contents below.
This is a black and white print that memorializes Confederate leaders. The print is full of bust view illustrations of many, many Confederate leaders. The artwork is done in the shape of an altar surrounded by two pillars and a latticework type border.
At the very top of the altar is a thin cross and beneath this is a disc that leads down to a narrow base under which is a larger base. Throughout the altar and base are inscriptions and portraits. Reading from the top down the inscription reads “MEMORIAL TO THE LOYAL SONS OF THE SOUTH, BRAVE CONFEDERATE HEROES WHO FOUGHT AND GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF SECESSION, 1861 TO 1865.” Next is “EX-PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS.” Davis’ portrait is in a wreath surrounded by the names of the Confederate states. This portrait is flanked by one of Robert E. Lee and Joseph Johnston as leaders of the two main Confederate armies. Beneath this section of the altar is Davis’ birth and death dates. Moving lower down the altar there is an inscription on a shield that that reads “I HAVE ERECTED A MONUMENT MORE LASTING THAN BRASS.” This shield is flanked by two ribands that read “A GREAT MIND IS AN ALTAR SET ON A HILL” and “FAME IS THE BIRTHRIGHT OF GENIUS.” Moving further down the altar there is a plinth subdivided by four pillars. Each section holds a portrait of a Confederate General. From left to right they are Kirby Smith-Commander of Trans-Mississippi, P.G.T. Beauregard – Hero of First Manassas, Braxton Bragg-Hero of Chickamauga and A. S. Johnston- Hero of Shiloh. The very bottom of the altar has two quotes “ALL HONOR TO THE SOUTHERN PRIVATE SOLDIER, THE VITAL SPIRIT OF THE CONFEDERACY. THE UNTITLED HERO OF THE WAR” and “THE SOUTH’S WOMEN WERE THE SOUL OF ITS PATRIOTISM, THE INSPIRATION OF ITS VALOR, THE GENIUS OF ITS CONSECRATION TO LIBERTY.” Across the very bottom are shields bearing the name of each of the Confederate states. The altar is flanked by two pillars, one on each side. Wrapped around each pillar is a riband bearing the names of the Confederate states, and hanging on each side of the altar are banners bearing the names of numerous Confederate Generals.
If all this were not enough, the whole area of the altar is enclosed in a lace border bearing the portraits of 40 Confederate Generals. Starting at the top left and going clockwise around the border the portraits depict Forrest, Fitz Lee, Walthall, W.H.T. Walker, Stuart, Cabell, Morgan, J. P. Anderson, Wheeler, Field, S. D. Lee, Grimes, Clement Evans, Gordon, Pickett, Early, Cook, Buckner, D. H. Hill, Cleburne, Hardee, Polk, Hood, Tatnall, Raphael Semmes, Franklin Buchanan, Ewell, Longstreet, Jackson, Cheatham, Price, Taylor, Van Dorn, E. P. Alexander, A. P. Hill, Hampton, Bradley Johnson, Breckenridge, A.P. Stuart and Loring.
the scale behind the item is in inches.
