Marion Indiana High School
Giants Team Spirit Button
Indiana Boys' Basketball
Made it to the Sweet 16 in 1981
Up for Auction is a 1981 Marion High School Giants Team Spirit Button.
This Button Referenced Market Square Arena in Indianapolis --Former Home of the Indiana Pacers and the Arena Where the Indiana High School State Basketball Championship Games Were Played.
The Marion Giants Did Not Get to the State Finals That Year but they Were in the Sweet Sixteen.
The Giants Lost in the Final Game of the Fort Wayne Semi-State to Warsaw 64-60. So, Only Two Baskets Kept this Powerful Team out of the Final Four and the Trip to Market Square Arena to Play in the Final Four.
Warsaw Lost to Anderson in the First Round. Vincennes Took Out Small School Shenandoah in the First Round and then Bested Anderson in the Final Game 54-52.
Games like the Final Game is Why Hoosiers are so Well Known for their Hoosier Hysteria.
The nickname of the students and the athletic teams is the "Marion Giants".
The school has been mostly known for its great basketball teams, winning seven Indiana state championship titles during their 100-year-long history.
These state championships include back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976 and also a three-peat in 1985, 1986, and 1987.
From 1975 to 1987 the Marion Giants dominated Indiana High School basketball with five state championships and two semi-state appearances and three Indiana Mr. Basketball award winners.
The only high school with more state championships than Marion's seven is conference rival Muncie Central with eight.
Marion's former basketball coach, Bill Green, has a state record of six state championships.
From the Inception in 1911, the Indiana Boys High School Basketball Program was only one class.
Winner Take All.
The Indiana High School Boys' Basketball Tournament Was Known as Hoosier Hysteria.
In the Infamous Wisdom of the Powers to Be, in 1997 Indiana went to a Multi-Class Tournament System.
Many protested and the demise of the Hoosier Hysteria was upon us.
Indiana Single-Class Basketball 3/10/1911 - 3/22/1997.
Here is an interesting fact that emerges:
Mother Teresa - (6/26/1910 - 9/25/1997)
Indiana Single-Class Basketball - (3/10/1911 - 3/22/1997)
Coincidence? -- We Think Not .....
Yes, it's true - The first official games of the Indiana High School Basketball tournament were played when Mother Teresa was 9 months old, and she died almost exactly 6 months after the last game in the single-class tournament.
She was alive when every game was played, and her life did not extend to even one game before the beginning of the tournament in 1911 or after its ending in 1997.
We don't know exactly what that means, but it sure is compelling .....
