hav168 - Up for auction is a Civil War era Haversack, made of upholstery tapestry material, works great for period money or modern credit cards, foods, medicines etc.. While I do not have specific documentation of the item, there are written materials that indicate Confederate soldiers in the very early war period, used haversacks such as this due to lack of issue items from the government suppliers. I made one for myself and it works well and so, I figure that a soldier or civilian of the period may have fashioned something similar. The pouch itself is lined with Light Olive 100% cotton fabric. The haversack is constructed of a nice reproduction type Burgundy upholstery tapestry material, (last pic is scan of actual material) about 11" X 11'. strap is about 26" so it is designed to hang right at waist level on 6' person. Two bone buttons close the flap, handsewn buttonholes, the haversack itself is machine sewn on modern machine. Most commercially available haversacks like this, are not lined, this one is fully lined. Great forreenactors, CAS, living historians of the Victorian era. Heck, my wife uses hers for everyday usage!!
