    hwife193M - Up for auction is a reproduction Civil War sewing kit, or rather, housewife as they may have been called during the War. KIt has three inside pockets for sewing items. Kit includes a "stork" head scissors, 3 small wooden sticks with approx 2 yards of thread (blue, black & white), bone, pewter, tin backed, and coat eagle button, 3 sewing needles, 4 straight pins, 2 pieces sky blue wool, dark blue wool and 3 peices of cotton for use as patching material. The whole kit is rolled and bound by white cotton tape. If you have ever been at an event and lost a button or blown a seam, you know how important this seemingly simple item can be. Heck you can charge your comrades to fix their trousers, great for living history activity.
    Homemade by me, using an authentic period hand cranked sewing machine. The machine (in 10th photo) is a Bradbury New Family which is a copy of the Singer New Family introduced in 1863 and uses the transverse shuttle system. This style is perfect for the Campaigner Progressive Living Historian that comes from a home that was fortunate enough to have a sewing machine. Many homes in the North probably had a sewing machine. Because the machine is so much faster, I can offer this kit at slightly lower cost than my totally handsewn version. Also, the thread used in the machine is antique cotton thread (shown in the 11th photo) for as much authenticity as possible. The material on this pair of braces is a period reproduction print fabric called PRAIRIE HOMESTEAD from SKY BLUE STUDIOS. The last pic is a scan of the actual fabric.
    The facing material is a 100% Cotton Blue with Off White stripe print
    fabric, inside fabrics are 100% cotton as shown, Kit measures 11"L  X 7"W when unfolded, 2" in diameter when rolled up.
