    Custer Medal
Designed by Brigadier General George A. Custer, for his wife, the medal is constructed of gold-tone brass with blue enamel trim featuring a single gold brigadier's star with the Maltese cross and faux pearls. Cast into the center of the Maltese cross is the name "Custer" and at the bottom is the Latin word "Tuebor" meaning "I will defend" which appears on the Michigan state seal adopted in 1836 and was meant to recognize the role of Michigan's citizens fighting in the War of 1812.
The original medal sold several years ago for many thousands of dollars and was featured on the covers of the books written by Mrs. Custer to tell the story of her husband, the dashing cavalier!
    Mrs. Custer's Medal
This takes a bit of explaining!
In 1887, or eleven years after his death, Custer's wife Elizabeth published her second book titled
Tenting on the Plains or General Custer in Kansas in Texas.
On several of the printed versions (see attached) there appeared on the cover what was purported to be the "Custer Medal."
This was troubling to me given that the documented description of the Custer Medal, and that which appears on the Michigan Cavalry Monument in Gettysburg, does not mention or feature any circles.
Given the choice between documents written at the time and a publishing house illustrator's concept of the medal, I went with the former in recreating this piece.
Subsequently, a medal which was authenticated as belong to Elizabeth Custer, came up for auction (See photo attached) accompanied with a statement that the medal being sold was designed especially for Elizabeth. As you can see, it contains 19 pearls, in the exact position as the circles on the book cover illustrations published at the time.
